Self Portraits, 8×8″ watercolor

I’m trying to learn how to create skin textures with watercolor. My skin has a lot of variety in its tones and I’m covered in freckles, so it was a fun challenge. This was painted from a reference photo I took a year or two ago when I was playing around with liquid eyeliner.

This was made with a mix of watercolor and gouache in the same sketchbook. I wanted to practice gesture more than skin tone and texture. There’s a long way to go with hand anatomy.

Painting faces at a side angle is hard!! This was done by observing my face in the mirror.

I applied a lot of what I learned from this little sketchbook series to my latest self portrait which brought together the skin texture, shadow and angles that I was going for. Check that one out here.
